By: Frances Gomez Free books? That could never happen! 800 fourth graders from around west Texas received the book, Adventures in the Arts: Mystery of the Gooey Grey Glob. The books were presented Texas Cultural Trust, whose mission is to educate and promote the arts in Texas. They believe that by supporting the arts it ensures Texas’ cultural and economic advantage for the future. The books were a gift from the Marathon Foundation, the Pinion Foundation and various private citizens. Karen Oswalt is the Chair of Board of Directors for the 2011-2013 term for Texas Cultural Trust. Oswalt, whose husband is from Fort Stockton, came from Austin to help pass out the books to the children. Oswalt has been a volunteer with Texas Cultural Trust for 17 years, was very excited about being here. Oswalt stated that Texas Cutltural Trust hope to give the children something that will motivate them to learn. Texas Cultural Trust is here to promote literacy and knowledge of the arts with the book they handed out. The book, whose heroes are Josh, Katie and Tina, have to find the courage to batter the Grey Glob that has threatend to destroy their school. The book comes with activities as well as a CD that both the student and teacher can follow along and work together to get the friends out of danger.,. On Apr. 12, when Representative Pete Gallego, Karen Oswalt, Michelle Prock and Caroline Hammond came to Fort Stockton to hand out the books, they were met with a great shout of excitement. The children were excited that they were going to receive a gift and that Rep. Gallego was handing them out. Each book came with its own book name plate for the students to write their names in them. There were many students that asked Gallego for his autograph for their new book.

A conversation with Amy Barbee, Executive Director of the Texas Cultural Trust, and Travis James, economist with Texas Perspectives, as posted on the Comptroller of Public Accounts website The Texas Economy.

The Texas Cultural Trust is an Austin-based nonprofit organization that helps raises awareness of how the arts can stimulate economic growth throughout the state.

Its recent report “The Art of Economic Development” examines the role the arts and culture industries play in both fostering economic growth in cities and towns throughout Texas as well as how they serve as a means of attracting and retaining today’s workforce — growing numbers of whom are employed in creative sector occupations that rely heavily on an employee’s critical thinking skills and ability to innovate.

In late February, we sat down with Amy Barbee, executive director of the Texas Cultural Fund and Travis James, an economist with Texas Perspectives, to discuss the scope of the report and some key findings. These are excerpts from our conversation.

THE artwork that organizations choose for their buildings, or for their grounds, is as important as the art that people select for their homes.

Corporate buyers are looking to complete their space in an interesting way. They also select paintings, photography and sculptures for their employees’ enjoyment and to project a certain image. Some view their art as an extension of their corporate work life. I enjoy the challenge of coming up with a plan that reflects what a client wants to say about itself. Read more.
