The Grand 1894 Opera House

The opera house, built in 1894, is one of the few remaining theatres of its era.  It  survived the storms of 1900 and 1915, Hurricanes Carla and Alicia, and several decades of neglect.

In 1974, individual art patrons, the business and corporate community, local government, and numerous state and national foundations offered the support needed to restore the Grand Opera House.  Today the Grand’s mission is to “sponsor and promote cultural and educational programs, and other activities” for the residents of Galveston and the Gulf Coast.

The Grand is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and was named “The Official Opera House of Texas” by the Seventy-third Texas Legislature. Along with its historic past, the Grand is paving the way for Galveston’s rich cultural future by presenting professional touring productions, which include dance, theatre, opera, comedy and musicals.  It also hosts 30 student and family programs throughout the year by professional touring companies, including outreach to the schools.
