2004 Young Master
Violinist Caitlin Tully of Austin, Texas, made her debut with the Vancouver Symphony at young age of ten, displaying a musical maturity and inspiration far beyond her years. Upon hearing her Yehudi Menuhin said, “She plays with more integrity than any young violinist I have ever heard.” Now at the age of seventeen, Ms. Tully performs with orchestras and in recitals across Canada and the United States.
Ms. Tully has won numerous national and international awards and scholarships including the National Arts Centre’s New Sun Millennium Award, the Kingsville Directors Prize and the Young Masters Scholarship from the Texas Cultural Trust.
Her scholarship allotted her the opportunity to become a student of Mr. Itzhak Perlman, with whom she began studying with at the Perlman Music Program. She started her violin studies in Vancouver at the age of four, after declaring to her parents that all she wanted for Christmas was a violin. She has worked alongside Lawrie Hill, Mr. Perlman, Ms. DeLay and Dr. Won Bin Yim at the Aspen Music Festival and Andrew Dawes. In previous seasons, Ms. Tully has performed with the Austin Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Houston Symphony, Knoxville Symphony, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony, Victoria Symphony and the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada. Future engagements include a six-city recital tour from the West coast to the Midwest, culminating in her Ravinia debut on their Rising Stars series.
In addition to performing, Ms. Tully has long been interested in composing. Her “Griffin Suite” has been performed at the Canadian National Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival. She is currently composing a small children’s opera, for which she is writing the libretto and designing costumes. When not performing or composing music, Ms. Tully enjoys studying languages, competing in 10K races, paragliding and designing clothing. Her most recent challenge is learning how to ride a unicycle.
